Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Environmental Services group is seeking leaders in the renewable and/or transmission power sector to complement our western Canadian environmental services team. We have an established Power and Renewables business line, which is made up of the Renewable Energy (wind and solar), Transmission and Distribution (T&D), Battery Storage, and Industrial Power groups. In this intermediate leadership role, you will serve as the project manager and will be responsible for developing T&D, renewable energy and battery storage opportunities in Alberta and Northern Canada, with the potential opportunity to get engaged in other projects across Canada. You will also support the national team across Canada in developing and executing strategic projects.

This role is a unique opportunity to work closely with senior leaders in Stantec in both the environmental and engineering businesses to collaboratively develop market strategies and drive business growth. In addition, you’ll get to leverage client relationships and industry knowledge to help our clients navigate through the regulatory framework and work collaboratively with technical disciplines to successfully execute projects.

This position can be located in our Calgary, Edmonton, or Yellowknife office. Due to expanding business opportunities within the company, this position offers exciting potential for growth.

Your Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the growth of our business in the power sector, including renewable power generation, battery storage, and transmission, working collaboratively with other scientific disciplines to manage projects lead though our environmental services business center and providing support to projects delivered though our other engineering business units. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Promote a positive Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) culture in the team and across the organization.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients in the power sector.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to support power projects.

  • Manage and lead the environmental assessments and permitting for power projects. This includes coordination with other project managers, discipline leads, and team leaders to develop effective project and program plans, processes, procedures, and schedules.

  • Direct internal technical team members and subject matter experts in a team environment.

  • Lead consultation with regulatory agencies.

  • Review technical reports.

  • Respond to client requests for proposals (RFPs) through creative thinking, alternative approaches and win strategies. This may include leading or supporting proposal preparation.

  • Support the development and execution of market strategy including the annual business plan.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in power sector markets, providing technical, market and technology expertise via the lens of environmental and regulatory considerations.

  • Provide team innovation by bringing together knowledge, best practices and planning functions while working in conjunction with the national Power Sector team to implement long-term market sector objectives and strategies.

  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, mentoring, on the job training and support to local and national teams.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Excellent working knowledge of provincial, territorial, and federal environmental assessment legislation.

  • Excellent working knowledge of provincial, territorial, and federal power project permitting requirements.

  • Experience working in the Northwest Territories is an asset.

  • Experience with Alberta Electrical System Operator (AESO) process including Market Participant Choice (MPC) is an asset.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong technical writing skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment that supports cooperation and teamwork.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment under deadlines.

  • Proven ability to prepare comprehensive reports and plans.

  • Ability to manage projects and tasks with a strong attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated experience in client management and business growth.

  • Knowledge of sustainability and climate change mitigation and adaptation

  • Valid Driver's License is an asset.

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Environmental Studies/Biology/Engineering or related field of study

  • Minimum 10 years of directly related experience in the power sector.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Stantec is proud to offer a hybrid work environment and this position may allow for flexible remote working opportunities. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
