An opportunity exists with Stantec’s International Development team in Washington, D.C. for a highly-motivated, people-minded, internationally-experienced, senior water and sanitation engineer with strong business acumen to take on a dually-focused technical and business development role. Reporting directly to the Vice President for International Development, this is a leadership role with autonomy and responsibility for sustaining and growing business net revenue related to the team’s water sector portfolio, comprised mostly of U.S. foreign assistance agency-funded projects and pursuits in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. There will also be an opportunity to apply technical expertise on key engineering projects with varying degrees of responsibility from advisory/oversight to project management/team lead capacities.
Your Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the development and execution of the International Development team’s overall business strategy and achievement of key operational and performance metrics
Establish and grow productive, collaborative relationships internally within the company, and externally with the team’s priority clients including the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Lead and/or advise on business development, capture management, and proposal activities (contribution of high quality technical content expected during all stages)
Provide technical expertise and lead technical delivery on a variety of projects ensuring successful outcomes for our clients and beneficiaries
Participate in all phases of project management including program development, budgeting, planning & design, preconstruction, project implementation, project oversight and project closure
Lead, challenge, and inspire technical staff (including coaching/mentoring young professionals) through substantive engagement and communication
Support Stantec’s brand awareness through thought leadership and stakeholder engagement

Entrepreneurially-minded with a core understanding of business and the challenges of an engineering consulting services provider
Experience in preparing comprehensive budget expenditures, overall project schedules, and in planning and managing revenue and expenses for a business unit
Strong technical background working as an engineer in progressively responsible design, construction, and/or oversight roles on water and sanitation infrastructure, water resource management, and/or water sector reform projects, programs or initiatives
Team player with experience building, leading, and managing a team of project managers and support staff
Strong business network of international development-sector relationships, ideally both in Washington D.C. and abroad
Excellent verbal and written communications skills with an ability to clearly convey and distill complex technical information to a variety of audiences
Fluency in English required; fluency in French is highly desired (Additional fluency in other languages such as Arabic or Portuguese a plus.)
Willingness and ability to travel internationally periodically for short-duration assignments (typically one to two weeks)
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in a civil engineering field required though a master’s degree in either an engineering or business-related field is highly preferred
Professional Engineering licensure (US) or Chartered Engineer (UK) required
Minimum 20 years’ experience working on water infrastructure-related projects or programs, ideally those funded by or affiliated with U.S. or international bilateral donor agencies (MCC, USAID, DFID, etc.) and/or other international financing institutions (World Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.). Demonstrated experience living/working abroad in developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa or Asia is highly desired.
