Your Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated Project Technical Lead to join our established practice in the West. Stantec’s major water infrastructure practice pursues and executes flood risk reduction, water supply, hydropower, mining, and inland navigation projects of varying size and complexity across North America and throughout the world. This is a senior-level position that will use their industry knowledge, client relationships, and technical expertise to win opportunities that grow our business and lead delivery of technically complex projects from planning to construction. The successful candidate will assist in setting the vision and strategic direction of our major water infrastructure practice in California while being connected to Stantec’s experts around the world. This position can sit in any one of our California office locations – including Sacramento, Walnut Creek, and Pasadena.

The Project Technical Lead is a seller-doer role which involves leading project pursuits with new and existing clients, leading the execution of technically complex water infrastructure projects, and seeing projects through to final inspection and commissioning. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Protect the health and safety of Stantec employees, clients, and the public by following company health, safety, and security guidelines and policies.

  • Provide leadership, management, and delivery oversight for major water infrastructure planning, design, and construction projects; with a focus on dam and levee projects in California.

  • Prepare engineering services scopes of work, cost and project estimates, job budgets, and schedules for dams and levees projects.

  • Lead meetings and represent Stantec during in-person client and regulatory agency meetings and interactions. Balance the interests of both the client and Stantec through each project.

  • Prepare subcontractor scopes of work and manage field investigation services including geotechnical and geologic drilling and testing, geophysical survey, concrete coring and testing, and laboratory testing.

  • Contribute to business strategy and resource development planning for dams and levees in the West.

  • Manage engineering and scientist staff as a direct manager and on a project basis. Mentor staff and identify additional talent to join our team as individual contributors or future leaders.

  • Maintain and enhance our reputation with clients, regulatory agencies, and industry professionals as an outstanding service provider.

  • Leadership and involvement in professional societies, including preparation and presentation of papers at professional society conferences and seminars.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed for business development, project, and recruitment needs.

  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Market knowledge and successful project delivery experience in California and demonstrated understanding of dam and levee infrastructure projects.

  • Strong business development skills with an entrepreneurial orientation, including experience developing and maintaining productive relationships with clients.

  • Demonstrated business development success in responding to Requests for Qualifications, Requests for Proposals, and Statements of Qualifications for dam and levee projects.

  • Strong leadership, team building, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex dam and levee infrastructure projects with an emphasis on technical and project delivery excellence.

  • Familiarity with state and federal dam and levee guidance and regulations, such as DSOD dam safety protocols, USACE design standards (Engineering Manuals), US Bureau of Reclamation manuals, FERC guidelines, etc.

  • Passion for dam and levee related projects.

  • Demonstrated experience with preparation of dams and levees design plans and specifications for bidding and construction purposes.

  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation with attention to detail.

  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.

  • Ability to lead project teams, engage in creative and critical thought, and effectively communicate ideas, design issues and solutions to others.

  • Strong organizational, technical, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to conduct effective client and agency presentations and written technical report preparation in English, as well as effective skills working in diverse team environments with staff, clients, and stakeholders.

  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Project). Understanding of dam and levee practice specific numerical modelling computer programs.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with at least 10 years of professional experience in complex dam and levee projects; Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical Engineering focus preferred.

  • Professional engineer license required. Existing California PE or ability to obtain within one year of hire required, with ability to obtain reciprocity in multiple states.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • SF Area $123,700/CA Other Areas $108,000 - SF Area $185,600/CA Other Areas $173,800 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.

Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
