Your Opportunity

Our Environmental Services group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in botany, ecology, fisheries biology, forestry, GIS, habitat and ecosystem restoration, environmental monitoring and risk assessment, hydrogeology, hydrology, information management, permitting and compliance, soil science, state and federal permitting, regulatory negotiation, stormwater planning and permitting, wetland science, and wildlife biology.

We are seeking a Lead Wetland Scientist to provide technical expertise for a variety of public and private projects across various disciplines including those in transportation, renewable energy, power generation and transmission, and commercial/residential throughout Vermont and greater northern New England.

Your primary responsibilities will involve conducting and/or leading small- to large-scale natural resource assessments; collecting and assimilating data; technical reporting; and preparing environmental permit applications. You will be supported by a core group of technical experts located throughout the northeast (and beyond).

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting wetland delineations and natural resource area surveys based on state and federal requirements (e.g., US Army Corps of Engineers - USACE and Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation - VT DEC);

  • Conducting GPS data collection;

  • Conducting rare, threatened and endangered species habitat characterizations, land use mapping, and vegetation cover classification;

  • Technical writing and report preparation;

  • Working knowledge of local, state and federal environmental permitting in Vermont;

  • Ability to work independently in the field and office; and

  • Interacting and communicating regularly with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and regulators;

  • Partnering with an integrated environmental/engineering team to deliver successful projects.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Professional wetland scientist with direct (self-performing) experience flagging wetlands and natural resources;

  • Expertise with operating GPS and iPAD units;

  • Ability to prepare wetland data forms and functions and value reports in support of permit applications;

  • Ability to articulate field data information into narrative reports and figures/plans in a clear, concise format;

  • Ability to support preparation of wetland related permit applications;

  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements, including the US EPA, USACE, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Vermont Natural Resources Board (VT NRB) Act 250, Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (VT ANR), Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, and VT DEC;

  • Knowledge of computer applications and functions, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat;

  • Excellence in verbal and written communication, including technical writing abilities;

  • Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with internal teams, clients, and regulators;

  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments independently and simultaneously;

  • Ability to perform work accurately in a detail- oriented environment; and

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, procedures, correspondence, and other written materials.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience

This position is based out of our South Burlington, VT office location, with ability to work a hybrid, flexible work schedule. Typical office environment working with computers. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 20 lbs.
