Stantec in Vancouver has an opportunity for an Entry Level Commissioning Consultant to join our established Western Canadian Commissioning Team under our Buildings Engineering Practice in Vancouver. This position is based in Vancouver with occasional travels to Vancouver Island, Alberta, and US in some cases.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Please note that Cx in this job posting stands for “Commissioning”.

  • Deliver building commissioning services for our valued clients (healthcare authorities, municipalities, educational institutions, and major private developers) throughout BC and Western Canada under the supervision and mentorship of our Senior Commissioning Leaders.

  • Support in developing of commissioning documents such as: commissioning plan, commissioning work plan, installation checklists, functional testing forms, site visit observation reports.

  • Review of design drawings and specifications and reporting to Clients with regard to whether proposed design satisfies the Owner’s project requirements and good engineering practices.

  • Occasionally providing feedback to Stantec Design teams on design their ideas and efficiency.

  • Assist building owners, designers, and sustainability consultants to achieve targeted sustainability goals by providing expertise comments on improving building systems operation and sequence of operation.

  • Assist the client in building performance optimization and GHG reductions by reviewing the HVAC systems trendlogs and operation history, developing test procedures to identify the issues and come up with rectification recommendations.

  • Review the project close-out documentations, O&M manuals, owner’s demonstration documentations, and testing reports to verify the building systems are being handed over to the buildings operation team in a timely manner and with an integrated approach.

  • Develop skills in project management including being able to come up with project plan, budgeting, keeping track of project finances, identify project risks, and provide project updates to upper management.

  • Attend industry meetings such as: commissioning pre-proposal meetings, construction meetings, on-site progress meetings, business development meetings.

  • Chair and minute commissioning meetings in which various parties such as engineers, project managers, contractors, and several other project stake holders will attend.

  • Conduct site visits in under construction environment in which solid 100% commitment to Stantec Safety protocols and job-site safety protocols are required.

  • Attend professional courses and trainings, conferences, and industry talks.

  • Put together quick presentations to pitch commissioning services and to inform the industry on benefits of building commissioning.

  • Assess the systems operation and systems conditions in existing buildings and provide reports on energy efficiency measures and energy conservation measures.

  • Support development and/or maintain documentation of Cx projects and milestone events in completion of Cx projects to provide timely and uniform periodic management information reports. Review project schedules for commissioning events and provide feedback for Cx budget reports.

  • Analyze contracts, review plans, drawings, specifications, and submittals and verify commissioning schedules as required. Identify deficiencies and out-of-scope work requirements and initiate appropriate measures with assigned project manager to facilitate project completion.

  • Proven commitment to ask questions, take notes, and being able to assess the areas of weakness and improvement as the individual progresses in their training.

  • Having a “go-getter” attitude, accept new challenges, and work as a team-player.

  • Being able to learn practices in both office environment and in the site, both through reading and understanding the procedures, and also while doing the tasks.

  • Having goals in developing a career in building industry, building performance optimization, building mechanical and electrical systems, and building envelope.

  • Willingness to take courses in all building-related matters, and certifications such as CCP, LEED accreditations, sustainability accreditations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing is required with both internal and external stakeholders. This role requires developing excellent technical and non-bias language when communicating with project stakeholders and contractors.

  • Ability to Multi-Task and being able to prioritize the tasks and plan work weeks and months. In this position, one will work on multiple projects at once all at varying stages of design / construction. As well with today’s construction industry dates for project and system turnover are always changing and the ability to adapt to these schedule changes is a prime asset for this role.

  • Having interest in working in both office and on site where you will meet and connect with other project participants and discuss the commissioning-related issues with them.

  • This role requires deriving to job sites located in and around Vancouver and Vancouver Islans. Having a valid 5 Class driver’s license and clean driving record is a must.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical college degree in engineering, construction management or Architectural engineering. Please note this is an entry level and Recent graduates from accredited programs will be given full consideration.

  • Eligibility and intent to pursue certification with EGBC (P. Eng.), C.E.T, Building Commissioning Association, ASHRAE, or equivalents.

  • Candidates with previous direct experience or internship experience in building design, building systems testing and commissioning, building systems service departments, performance testing jobs in factory or in the field will be given higher consideration.

  • Basic understanding of operation of mechanical systems such as fans, pumps, sensors, and heating and cooling plants. Having hand-on experience in working with these systems is an asset.

  • Basic understanding of controls systems and control loops.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • Lower Mainland $62,800 - Lower Mainland $87,900 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in BC (Lower Mainland includes Vancouver & Burnaby)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
