Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Buildings group in Toronto provides Architecture, Interior Design and Engineering across multiple sectors including healthcare, transportation, airports, civic and industrial. Our team is passionate about the design quality of the built environment and create designs that are timeless, intelligent, and sustainable. We work closely with other Stantec business units like program management and civil engineering in integrated teams.

You will manage integrated teams to partner with industry leading clients on innovative projects and transformational spaces. As the Project Manager you will partner with Principals to be responsible for project performance in terms of client satisfaction, design excellence, financial performance, team mentorship, and technical quality. The role primarily involves client facing leadership and management of the internal team with both internal and external consultants. The Project Manager may be called upon to manage multiple projects of various complexity and scope. Engagement for Project Managers typically starts with pre-positioning for pursuits and includes proposal stage, contract negotiation, design, documentation, construction, and close-out.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing a wide range of complex tasks on small, medium, and large size projects.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs our work throughout the life of the project to deliver successful projects to clients. Defines project scope and prepares and communicates project plans to team members and consultants.

  • Determines project staffing needs and works with Staffing Committee and Operations Manager to identify local personnel. Searches for, identifies, and negotiates with Stantec stakeholders for the best people to staff your projects. Onboards them and manages their integration into the team and their performance. Manages their removal from a team, should that become necessary.

  • Assists with negotiating and developing project agreements.

  • Builds trusting relationships between team members and with the client, maintaining firm, fair and professional relationships.

  • Maintains regular, thorough, high quality internal and external communications.

  • Develops their negotiating skills so as to negotiate win-win solutions to all types of challenges encountered during project delivery.

  • Leads the client and project team to deliver design that meets the client’s budget, schedule, program, and design intent.

  • Leads project coordination and owner/site meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor and sub-contractors.

  • Proactively manages project risk to protect Stantec’s (and the client’s) interests.

  • Proactively manages design and documentation quality control and quality assurance and keeps written records of these processes. You are responsible for only issuing documents that have been appropriately checked and reviewed and should be able to prove that at any time.

  • Gets documents signed by people with the right signing authority and issues them on time.

  • Monitors projects’ financial performance and protects and manages their gross margins.

  • Updates budgets, scopes, and schedules throughout the life of the project, and documents all changes to them. Manages and tracks change orders, applications for payment by contractors and other contractual modifications impacting budget and schedule. Directs client invoicing and effectively manages collections.

  • Becomes proficient in Stantec’s Project Management Framework and performs all required tasks at the appropriate times.

  • Escalates issues to leadership when necessary.

  • Keeps the Principal in Charge informed of progress on project expectations, deadlines, and deliverables and understands the limits of the decision-making responsibilities of the role and respects the boundaries of the Principal in Charge’s responsibilities.

  • Mentors Assistant Project Managers.

  • To protect and nurture your own mental health, delegate and then manage successful performance of any of these responsibilities so you can focus on the most important tasks and those that you are best at.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Exhibit extensive project experience supporting the ability to deliver quality work.

  • Simultaneously support one or more Principals on multiple projects.

  • Be good with and enjoy working with numbers. Understand financial accounting principles and processes. Be able to interpret and report on the financial performance of your projects accurately and reliably.

  • Understand and grasp building construction systems, means and methods, materials, building codes and associated industry standards.

  • Proactively and independently take appropriate action without continual direction or guidance.

  • Effectively manage multiple deadlines and priorities while nurturing your own mental health.

  • Be good with people and an excellent communicator. Be a team player with the client, team members and construction partners.

  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and have experience of delivering projects with Revit, AutoCAD, and preferably also Newforma.

Education and Experience

  • Professional degree in Architecture or Engineering.

  • Minimum of five years of experience.

  • LEED Green Associate or LEED BD C preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
