We are looking for an exceptional Discipline Leader (DL) of Landscape Architecture (LA) to head our skilled team of designers and landscape architects. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in designing vibrant public spaces and outdoor areas, a dedication to sustainable design, and a solid history of successful project management and business development. This individual has a ‘seller-doer’ mindset and the ability to lead and grow discipline-specific teams across North America to seek and deliver LA projects. Reporting to the Business Leader (BL) of Community Development (CD), the DL role contributes to the expansion of Stantec’s LA practice across North America. The DL has a unique position that involves directing and developing a core CD service, with responsibility for team recruitment and development, creating and implementing practice initiatives, ensuring project delivery excellence, integrating technology, and enhancing Stantec’s reputation in the industry. The DL’s role advances our LA disciplines’ best practices, innovation, quality, and standards as they relate to the delivery of our work.

The LA DL must foster a culture of innovation and curiosity and have the ability and willingness to evaluate our performance and always ask if there is a better way to do our work. Similarly, the LA DL must promote our best work that is collectively ours, increase our ability to win the most desirable work, attract the best talent, and invest in the future of our practice through recruitment and support of our internship program.

The LA DL establishes the vision for their technical discipline and works together with other Sector Leaders (SLs), Business Center (BC) leaders, Regional Business Leaders (RBLs) and Regional Leaders (RLs) in identifying opportunities, assigning the right resources, and matching teams to suitable skills and advancement. The DL performs projects as either a discipline lead, project technical lead, Project Manager (PM) and/or in a senior technical role on significant projects in the region, or corporately.

Your Key Responsibilities

Technical Practice

  • Lead the LA practice, setting strategic direction and ensuring design excellence across North America.

  • Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and creativity.

  • Manage high-profile projects from conception through completion, ensuring they meet quality, budget, and timeline objectives.

  • Coordinate with other DL’s, BC leaders, RBLs, SLs, and Leadership to educate regions on the services offered by the discipline, build working relationships, and promote positive cultural change.

  • Collaborate with BC Leadership and PMs to promote work-sharing and import and export personnel to successfully deliver projects throughout the business.

  • Assign, review and evaluate work for technical accuracy and completeness; and advise on technical problems.

  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of standards including templates, guides, and training documentation.

  • Facilitate staff training on existing and new technologies, go to market ideas and discipline best practices around project delivery.

  • Perform and coordinate quality control and independent reviews for discipline work products.

  • Monitor compliance with our independent and peer reviewer frameworks.

  • Coordinate software disciplines-specific software licensing across water and in collaboration with IT and with partner business lines (where applicable).

  • Maintain a culture of learning and collaboration across the discipline-specific group in a drive for quality and consistency across the discipline’s pool of staff.

  • Actively maintain internal and external networks to provide mentoring and coaching opportunities for team members.

  • Ensure career paths are managed and monitored to highlight the progress of staff as we look at both succession planning and opportunities.

  • Collaborate with the BC and RBLs to develop high performing project delivery teams and engaged project staff while setting expectations for individual and team performance.

  • Leads and supports regular communication and collaboration meetings with the BC leaders and Project Management/Project Technical Leader community in the BC.

  • Works closely with the RBLs and BC leaders to support priorities within the region and BCs. Contributes, as needed, to regional and business line updates/reports.

Business Development

  • Participate and contribute to CD’s Business Annual Strategic plan and subsequent implementation (win, do, manage) with emphasis LA discipline.

  • Cultivate strong client relationships and identify new business opportunities.

  • Identify top LA pursuits and strategic initiatives that have high win probability.

  • Partner with RLs, RBLs and SLs to market discipline-specific design and technical expertise to both global/national and local/regional clients.

  • Assist RBLs, SLs and BC leaders in providing design and technical expertise and support for pursuits within the business line and/or sector, and more globally across other business lines as applicable.

  • Grow the business of Landscape Architecture at Stantec through internal cross-selling.

People Leadership

  • Foster a strong culture of health and safety and staff recognition.

  • Manage and oversee regional DLs including SMEs.

  • Determine key and strategic hiring needs to support practice initiatives and enhance project delivery.

  • Help BC leaders with resource management, recruitment, career development, succession planning, coaching, mentoring, and leadership development for the discipline.

  • Ensure that project managers are using Stantec’s PM framework and working in an ethical, professional way.

  • Help leaders to ensure and provide the right staff to finish work within budget, on time, with high quality.

  • Evaluate the need for additional staff with leadership and BC leaders or discuss the possibility to use staff from other locations to finish work tasks.

  • Evaluate registration coverage across states and provinces.

Mentorship

  • Work with other CD leaders to develop, train and mentor staff.

  • Support staff in finding outside mentors and training when such assistance will bring value back to the practice and the individual.

  • Provide honest, open, and timely feedback to staff when behaviors/skills need attention. Likewise, provide positive feedback in a timely manner.

  • Provide guidance (problem solving) for staff across North America as needed.

Increase the Visibility of Landscape Architecture

  • Lead presentations at conferences/events attended by current/future clients and support the same by others within the discipline.

  • Identify and support project award submissions.

  • Encourage authoring papers, articles, internal webinars, blogs, etc.

  • Work collaboratively to enhance Stantec visibility and brand recognition.

Innovation and Creativity

  • Champion innovation, research, and development initiatives and nurture a culture of design excellence in process, implementation, and reputation.

  • Integrate technology and innovation into our service offerings to elevate our value proposition and increase productivity.

  • Work with Infrastructure’s Innovation BC to promote emerging technologies and troubleshoot software issues related to the discipline.

Community of Practice

  • Support a firm-wide community of practice and provide leadership to maintain and elevate our networking capacity for workshare, business development, client development and retention, and recruitment.

  • Work with the COE leadership and the marketing team leads to provide practice-wide communication.

  • Use social media or other venues to elevate the visibility of Stantec and our Landscape Architecture Practice.

  • Encourage and support project recognition and award programs to highlight and celebrate our work.

Work Share/Project Collaboration

  • Effectively cross-sell LA with Stantec’s many disciplines and sectors.

  • Identify and connect with specific expertise across geographic regions and assist with the import/export of talent within the global Stantec network.

  • Provide discipline-specific services and support for geographies and offices that don’t have local capabilities.

  • Continue to implement and further expand work share with Stantec’s Pune team.

  • Assist in establishing a LA practice in Pune.

KPIs

  • Achieve a utilization target of 30%.

  • DL will partner with SLs and BCPLs to identify LA projects for the top pursuit list per region. DL will ensure we preposition and swarm with our best talented people.

  • Maintain and advance LA discipline standards including standard details, species, design guidelines, quality reviews.

  • Drive higher productivity per hour through increasing the year over year usage of the latest digital design tools available from ESRI, Autodesk and Revit.

  • Work force goals: Voluntary Turnover and Effective Workforce Hiring Ratio

  • Achieve HSSE goals and targets for leaders

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or related field.

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in landscape architecture, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Licensed Landscape Architect or equivalent.

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a wide range of projects, with an emphasis on sustainable and innovative design solutions.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Salary Range(s):

  • NYC $173,000 / Outside NYC $137,300 - NYC $268,100 / Outside NYC $212,800 Min/Max Pay Range(s) for postings located in NYC/NY

  • $151,000 - $234,100 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CO and HI

  • SF Area $173,000 / CA Other Areas $151,000 - SF Area $268,100 / CA Other Areas $251,100 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.

Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
