To continue serving the Caribbean out of our office in Barbados, we are looking for a Structural Engineer to join our fast-growing and innovative firm.

Your Opportunity

Your role in our professional consulting services team is to work independently on projects of average complexity, and as a leader of the civil engineering buildings team and various projects through all phases of a project lifecycle including many exciting projects.

You must have aptitude for leadership and management of technical and professional staff within the Civil Engineering Discipline. You should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer systems or products for a project. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include client liaison, assistance with business development, calculations, and field work. Your assigned projects may be broad, varied, and diverse in scope from analyzing proposed projects to ensuring structural reliability, resource efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for projects of average complexity and size.

  • Ability to assist with the business development – generation of expressions of interests and proposals for work under the guidance of the office operations leader.

  • Evaluates, selects, specifies, and engineers all civil engineering systems or products for a project.

  • Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.

  • Roads, grading and pipe network design for land development

  • Utilizes technologies in the development of three-dimensional models of civil systems and provides markups for junior engineers/designers for civil3D drawings and specification documents.

  • Prepares and revises documentation in various civil phases including site plans, diagrams, and details.

  • Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owners, contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.

  • Participates in client project requirement meetings and value analysis and basic cost estimating.

  • Assists senior engineers/designers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.

  • May lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.

  • Utilizes advanced techniques for the analysis of specialized civil engineering elements such as utilities and earthworks.

  • Participates in constructability reviews as part of an integrated buildings engineering team of architects, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers.

  • Performs calculations to analyze and engineer civil system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software such as AutoCAD Civil3D, EPA SWMM, and EPANet/WaterCAD.

  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on projects and tasks.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Leadership experience is preferred

  • Requisite knowledge and application of Specifications, Building Code, and other pertinent codes relative to jurisdictions

  • Knowledge of civil systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards.

  • Understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.

  • Recognition when technical problems have developed. Initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.

  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team goal setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Ability to conduct construction field reviews of civil engineering works.

  • Ability to conduct drainage studies.

  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, and other similar materials.

  • Takes initiative on tasks and coordinates with other members of the design team. Effective communicator and able to work on and lead teams.

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

  • Presentation and interview skills are preferred.

  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.

  • Understanding and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD Civil3D, EPA SWMM and EPANet/WaterCAD and/or similar software.

Education and Experience

  • Applicants should hold a strong first degree in civil engineering.

  • At least 6 years of experience working in a recognized design consulting engineering firm.

  • Competence in the use of engineering computer software such as Tekla Structures, TEDDS or similar software is preferred.

  • A post graduate degree in Structural Engineering from a reputable university would be an asset.

  • Having work experience in the Caribbean would be well received.

  • Capable of obtaining the Caricom Skilled Graduate National status - if not already a resident of Barbados
