Your Opportunity

This position is to serve in a role as project architect during construction administration on a significant, hospital replacement project in San Jose, California. The project includes a ground up a six-story, 640,000 sf replacement bed with a program of 303-beds, a 72-room Emergency Department, 10 Operating Room Suite, a Central Utility Plant, a 1,000-stall parking structure, and complex site improvements.

The role requires to be co-located on the construction site a minimum 3 days per week working in a very collaborative team environment with fellow architects, designers, engineers, contractor, major sub-trades, and the client. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2030.

Upon completion of the project, you will continue to be part of our thriving healthcare practice supporting all aspects of the project process from validation/pre-design through construction administration and close-out within Acute, Sub-Acute, Outpatient, and Clinical Laboratory Healthcare projects. Coordination with consultants, contractors, and Owners can be a part of your weekly activities to manage projects. Along with your Project Manager, you will support multiple projects at any time, within various phases of design and construction.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • During the construction administration of the hospital replacement project:

  • Ensure the design intent is maintained during construction administration.

  • Be an active participant in the weekly Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings to represent the design team, coordinate and resolve key issues with project team members, and provide status update and constraints on key issues.

  • Work collaboratively with a team of fellow project architects, designers, engineers, sub-trades, vendors, and the client to solve complex issues during construction.

  • Work closely with the design team and consultants to review and respond to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings in a timely manner to maintain construction schedule, while engaging with the general contractor, sub-trades, vendors, and the client where appropriate.

  • Be the point person to lead a team for a component of the project, while inspiring and mentoring team members for their continued growth.

  • Work closely with the Inspector of Record (IOR), Compliance Officer (CO), District Structural Engineer (DSE), and Fire Life Safety Officer (FLSO) to ensure construction progress is meeting the intent of the construction documents, while preparing Non-Material Alterations (NMA) or Amended Construction Documents (ACD) in response to revisions to the permitted documents. Responsibility also includes the review and obtaining HCAI approval for such documents with the CO, DSE, and/or FLSO.

  • Maintain the Test, Inspection, and Observation (TIO) form for compliance with HCAI.

  • Perform frequent site observations and generate field reports that document construction progress and any deviations.

  • Create Verified Compliance Reports (VCR) at milestones for HCAI review and approval.

  • Deliver the project successfully to Certificate of Occupancy and Date of First Patient.

  • Continuing as a Project Architect in the practice:

  • Inspire creativity, critical thought, and design excellence both internally and externally.

  • Conceptualize a building design from both a functional and aesthetic perspective in concert with a client’s requirements, budget, and program.

  • Develop a design through sketches, physical models, electronic models, diagrams, massing studies, and other visual formats to express the design intent and communicate to project team, client, and building user groups.

  • Utilize BIM technologies in development of three-dimensional models of buildings and their components.

  • Participate in design critiques and constructability reviews.

  • Present the design with the Project Manager and Project Designer to stakeholders during early project phases. Develops building design in accordance with cost parameters.

  • Work with the medical planner to ensure space planning, block planning, and adjacency diagrams align with the building program.

  • Evaluate and select building systems and materials.

  • Coordinate building systems to ensure compatibility with the design intent.

  • Implement sustainable design principles into the design and environment.

  • Implement Life Safety strategies for healthcare and related occupancies.

  • Knowledge of Lean tools and on-site big room experience is a plus.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Participate in on-site project team setting.

  • Knowledge of building construction systems, constructability, materials, and industry associated standards.

  • Strong communicator with a proactive team approach and effective organizational skills that can lead a collaborative team with clarity and focus on complex construction issues while maintaining construction schedule.

  • Check work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage team to meet project budget and schedule.

  • General understanding of the relationship between drawings and specifications.

  • Apply accessibility codes, applicable building codes, and life-safety codes to a wide variety of project scopes and complexity.

  • Engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Produce design at a level that would be perceived externally as excellent.

  • Hand sketch and communicate concepts and ideas to others effectively.

  • Lead one or more teams on varying size projects through the development of design concept.

  • Interpret sketches, drawings, codes, building program and other similar material.

  • Present abstract ideas to the client and client representatives.

  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture

Minimum of 12 years of experience, preferably on large teams with healthcare clients.

Well versed with HCAI/OSHPD processes, forms, and protocols required.

California Registered Architect preferred.

Familiarity with e-builder platform preferred.

Possess general understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and Newforma

Experience with leading and implementation of Lean Tools preferred

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • SR Area $108,900 - SF Area $163,300 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
