Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for a Geotechnical Practice Leader to join our team in the Charlotte, NC area. This position will be a core member of our Water team and will work collaboratively with other local and regional Water business leaders, as well as with Stantec’s national Geotechnical team, to support the needs of our clients on local, regional, and national projects. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing Stantec’s market profile and position as it relates to geotechnical and civil engineering within the Carolinas. You will also oversee and direct projects and project teams throughout the complete life cycle of projects, beginning in the pursuit phase for a variety of project sectors and markets.

The Geotechnical Practice Leader leverages their technical skills, industry and market knowledge, and client and partner relationships to win and deliver projects to grow the geotechnical discipline.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Engage directly in identifying, pursuing, and winning pursuits.

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance Stantec’s market position with clients, approval agencies, and industry professionals as an outstanding service provider.

  • Grow internal and external networks and identify additional talent to join the Stantec team.

  • Lead technical approach development and delivery for projects and manage a community of geotechnical practitioners in the Carolinas.

  • Establish project objectives and procedures, and lead teams on proposals, planning studies, designs, and construction services for geotechnical engineering projects.

  • Provide mentoring and training for junior geotechnical engineering staff.

  • Possess good business awareness and acumen and maintain a deep understanding of project management fundamentals: project scope, cost, and schedule.

  • Have a clear understanding of current and future market and business conditions, revenue and profit potential, and major clients and competitors within the markets of North and South Carolina.

  • Assist in the recruitment of high caliber engineers and scientists to our Geotechnical discipline.

  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and represent Stantec in social, community, and business situations.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Excellent communication skills: verbal, business writing, electronic communications, and presentations.

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to understand project and team roles, scheduling, budgeting, and efficient use of time and resources.

  • Entrepreneurial nature and ability to lead others to achieve group results.

  • Strong knowledge of civil and geotechnical systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards.

  • Understanding of state and federal regulations, and the ability to adapt to client-specific requirements.

  • Ability to interpret sketches, engineering drawings, and other similar materials.

  • Ability to concurrently lead several projects or tasks with a sound understanding of overall goals, objectives, and costs to our clients.

  • Possess strong problem-solving skills and ability to lead and make timely decisions.

  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness.

  • Strong mentoring and leadership skills, and desire to encourage and coach junior staff.

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina with ability to obtain reciprocity to other states.

  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office products, and some experience or familarity with AutoCAD Civil3D, Microstation, Geostudio Software Suite (Slope/W & Seep/W), Plaxis, ENSOFT LPILE, FB Deep/MultiPier, DigiPro2, and OpenGround on projects.

Education and Experience

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering from an accredited university required; Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Licensure: Professional Engineer license required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years of experience.

  • Experience working on municipal, state, and federal contracts; working within the Southeast and knowledge of local geologic conditions preferred.

Flexible office and/or field arrangements depending on required activities. Typical office environment includes working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
