Your Opportunity
Stantec’s Northeast Region is seeking an experienced Environmental Scientist/Bat Ecologist to provide environmental field surveys, reporting, and permitting support for clients in the transportation, renewable energy, electric transmission, and other business sectors. Successful applicants will assist our team of environmental professionals on environmental impact analysis, bat surveys, as well as wetlands, stream, and vegetation assessments/monitoring, and endangered species surveys across the Northeastern US.
As an Environmental Scientist/Bat Ecologist, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/natural resource specialists, ecosystem restoration engineers, NEPA specialists, environmental planners, and regulatory experts in the Northeast. This position has flexibility with the home office location in the Northeast including the possible Stantec offices, including: South Burlington VT, Topsham ME, Auburn NH, Northampton, Burlington, and Quincy MA, and Hartford CT. The position includes opportunities for both field and office work; it may also involve extensive travel and several weeks in the field and away from home. The ideal applicant will lead bat mist net surveys as needed have experience conducting acoustic bat surveys.

Acoustic data analysis for Bats and Birds
Wetland and stream delineation and assessment
Vegetation inventories/monitoring
Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments
Aquatic assessments (lake and stream)
Wildlife radio-tracking
Background data reviews
Environmental permit applications for state and federal permitting efforts
Endangered resource record reviews
GPS data collection and mapping support
ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications
Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data
Prepare written natural resource reports for client and regulatory agency review.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Hold, or currently on a federal recovery permit allowing capture of eastern bat species (Indiana, northern long-eared, and gray bats)
Experience setting acoustic detectors for survey and data download, organization, and analysis using automated software programs
An interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation, and the outdoors is essential.
The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.
A positive attitude in all working conditions is key.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills.
Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail.
Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required.
Working understanding of policies and procedures for health, safety, security, and environment, including client-specific training (as required).
Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.
Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work
Conscientious, organized, and disciplined.
Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and throughout the company.
Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.
Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
Education and Experience
The candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an environmental discipline (biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science or related natural resources field) with demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region.
Ideal candidates will have a Masters in a related discipline, 10 years plus wildlife/bat experience and/or either have a current USFWS Section 10 Permit or be able to be added to Stantec’s federal bat permit.
Must be comfortable with computers and submeter hand held GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment.
Technical writing skills are necessary for this position.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
