Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an individual who has a “Seller-Doer” mentality and the capacity to lead multi-disciplinary teams to pursue and execute projects primarily associated with Stantec’s Water Business and lead our North American Civil Works and Hydraulic Structures Discipline. These projects include flood risk reduction projects such as dams, spillways, gated structures, navigation, weirs, levees, pump stations, as well as conveyance and drainage structures and other ancillary structures.

The NADL – North America Discipline Leader role contributes to growth of Stantec’s Hydraulic Structure Practice with responsibility across team recruitment and development, development and implementation of practice initiatives, project delivery excellence, integration of technology and elevating Stantec’s brand in the industry.

Reporting to the US Delivery Center Leader and Water Resources Sector Leader, the North American Discipline Leader (NADL) is responsible for their respective Water Delivery Discipline. NADLs hold a unique position in the Water business, their role to guide our engineering disciplines in the advancement of skills, innovation, quality, and standards as it relates to the delivery of our work.

The NADL sets the vision for their technical discipline and works collaboratively with the BC and Regional Discipline Leads in identifying opportunities, allocating the right resources, and mapping teams to appropriate skills and advancement. They execute projects as either a discipline lead, Project Technical Lead, Project Manager and/or in a senior technical capacity on significant projects in the region, or corporately.

Your Key Responsibilities

Technical Practice

  • Lead and contribute to the maturation of Stantec’s Civil Works and Hydraulic Structures discipline.

  • Provide technical leadership as SME, PM, and quality leader to support efficient delivery key projects spanning North American Water Operations.

  • Support and provide leadership in heavy civil engineering including participation in condition assessments, risk assessments, inspections, planning and design, issue evaluations, engineering during construction.

  • Coordinate with other Stantec team leads and discipline leads, including civil, geotechnical, hydraulics, structural, coastal, environmental and others to develop technical approaches and scopes of work.

  • Provide industry leadership through professional organizations including holding key positions, publishing papers and presentations, and elevating Stantec’s brand in the Water Resource Sector.

  • Integrate technology and innovation into our service offerings to elevate our value proposition and increase productivity.

  • Prepare/Review documentation, reports, and presentations.

  • Identify key and strategic hiring needs to drive practice initiatives and promote project delivery.

Other Activities and Practices

  • Perform and coordinate QC and Independent reviews for discipline work products.

  • Monitor compliance with our independent and peer reviewer frameworks.

  • Confirm resources are allocated early on in pursuit and project scoping and hold appropriate levels of expertise.

  • Coordinate software disciplines-specific software licensing across water and in collaboration with IT and with partner business lines (where applicable).

  • Identify opportunities to differentiate the discipline through showcasing advancement.

  • Maintain a culture of learning and collaboration across the discipline-specific group in a drive for quality and consistency across the discipline’s pool of staff.

  • Actively maintain internal and external networks to provide mentoring and coaching opportunities for team members.

  • Ensure career paths are managed and monitored to highlight progress of staff as we look at both succession planning and opportunities.

  • Collaborate with the Business Center Operations Leaders (BCOLs) and Regional Discipline Leaders (RDLs) to lead and develop high performing project delivery. teams and engaged project staff while setting expectations for individual and team performance.

  • Leads and supports regular communication and collaboration meetings with the Business Center (BC) leaders and Project Management/Project Technical Leader community in the BC.

  • Works closely with the Regional Business Leaders (RBLs) and BC leaders to support priorities within the Region and BCs. Contributes, as needed, to regional and business line updates/reports.

  • Helps recruit and hire, consistent with regional and BC resource needs.

Business Development

  • Participate and contribute to Stantec’s North American Water Business Annual Strategic plan and subsequent implementation (win, do, manage) with emphasis on Water Resource Sector and implementation of strategies.

  • Lead and contribute to the positioning, pursuit, capture, scoping and delivery of projects and programs of work.

  • Development of long-lasting relationships with clients and industry professionals.

  • People Leadership

  • Promote a strong culture of health and safety.

  • Direct supervision of a technical discipline team including SMEs

  • Recruitment and team development to expand Stantec’s capabilities and competencies.

  • Manage personal and team time to meet project budget and schedule objectives.

  • Communicate and collaborate with the project team, project managers, clients, and coordinate with teams in dispersed geographic locations and Business Lines.

Meet Discipline business plan targets within budget for the following:

  • Discipline Staff Utilization Target

  • M&BD

  • Administration

  • Training

  • Maintain and advance Discipline Standards, Details and Specifications including:

  • Discipline Guidelines

  • Discipline QC standards

  • Discipline Task Manager Oversight

  • Manage approved Discipline Task Managers to support projects.

  • Assess performance and train EDLs.

  • Meet project schedules.

  • Reporting and Direct Time Utilization

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • PE (Professional Engineer) certification

  • Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills

  • Strong leadership and team building skills

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought

  • Expertise in Hydraulic Structures engineering and design

  • Capacity to communicate clearly via phone, email, technical writing, and in-person to internal and external clients

  • Passion for heavy civil water resource infrastructure

  • Available for intermittent travel

  • United States citizen or permanent resident

Preferred

  • Possesses excellent management skills, thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources

  • Ability to lead and support strategic pursuits

  • Demonstrated performance and experience in hydraulic structures, assessment, detailed design (plans and specifications) flood risk reduction infrastructure, quality management, and project management.

  • Ability to solve complex problems using professional judgment, creativity, and innovation

  • Leadership experience including program and project management

  • Demonstrated performance of building technical teams and working across large, diverse teams distributed across geographies.

  • Understanding of business operations, planning, and working within operational targets to grow a practice.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Civil Engineering, or a related degree

  • 20 years of hydraulic structure experience

Employment Details

  • Work schedule: hybrid – 2/3 days WFH, 2/3 days office, travel as needed.

Salary Range(s):

  • NYC $169,600/Outside NYC $134,600 - NYC $262,800/Outside NYC $208,600 Min/Max Pay Range(s) for postings located in NYC/NY

  • $148,100 - $229,500 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CO and HI

  • $158,800 - $246,100 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in WA

  • SF Area $169,600/CA Other Areas $148,100 - SF Area $262,800/CA Other Areas $246,100 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
