About the role

As a Principal Stormwater Engineer, you will join our busy and thriving water team in New Zealand. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to deliver positive outcomes through Te Mana o te Wai for infrastructure and development projects across Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.

At Stantec, we’re highly aware of the global challenges our industry is facing, especially the impacts of climate change. To productively respond to these challenges, Stantec is developing a Stormwater Academy—a globally connected training organisation to enable global delivery and knowledge sharing. Our Stormwater Academy will be a pathway for new entrants to the stormwater infrastructure industry to learn, develop, and engage with international expertise. We’ll have hubs in New Zealand, Australia, India, the USA, and the UK, all interconnected communities of stormwater professionals. Establishing the academy is our response to some of the global challenges on the horizon, aiming to better equip our industry to solve them.

Your varied responsibilities as a Principal Stormwater Engineer will include:

  • Improving the understanding of stormwater in Aotearoa New Zealand by working with our clients, communities, and our teams.

  • Supporting resilience, adaptation, and recovery work across the country.

  • Taking a technical lead role or act as a reviewer or advisor to deliver strategy, planning, design, and innovation across a range of stormwater projects from catchment planning to reconstruction following storm events.

  • Delivering various stormwater infrastructure, including climate change mitigation, nature based‑ solutions, and water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) elements.

  • Assisting with the Stormwater Academy, connecting globally, and growing an improved workforce to meet future challenges.

  • Liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including mana whenua, urban designers, clients, and technical experts across many disciplines.

  • Providing guidance and mentoring to junior staff to grow their skill.

  • Growing and developing your technical and professional skills .

What you will bring

You will have a successful track record of technically leading complex stormwater designs in a multidisciplinary environment. Excellent organisation and time management skills are a given, along with a project delivery mindset, to ensure deadlines are achieved.

Additional attributes that may help you succeed in the role:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil or Environmental Engineering

  • Extensive demonstrated experience in stormwater design

  • Expertise with relevant stormwater software

  • Ability to lead projects whilst developing and mentoring other team members

  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with a range of stakeholders to achieve project outcomes

  • Collaborative in nature and proven ability to work with local and virtual teams across New Zealand

  • A growth mindset and the desire to question how we can achieve better outcomes
