Your Opportunity

This Innovation Portfolio Engineer will work on a range of projects focused on the implementation and advancement of research and digital tools and technologies focused on the water, wastewater, biosolids and energy sectors. The role will liaise closely with the Innovation Portfolio Managers in Water BOU’s Office of Innovation & Technology (OI&T) and the Director of Innovation and Technology. In addition, the role will collaborate with sector leaders and sector professionals, water delivery center, applied research group, and regional delivery leads as needed based on project activities. The role will be leading and driving our innovation in two key priority areas: 1. development of digital tools to enhance our process engineering delivery (e.g., physical-chemical process, biological processes) and 2. applied research. The professional will report to an Innovation Portfolio Manager in the OI&T.

Your Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with OI&T, Process Solutions, Stantec.io and other groups as needed to drive development of digital solutions (solution = product supporting service) to address:

    • engineering solutions in the water market (water, wastewater, biosolids, etc.);
    • O&M decision support for utilities which will be sold through selected go-to- market strategies, and
    • planning/general engineering solutions relevant to the water industry (e.g., GHG emissions, facility planning, etc.)
  • Program, code or develop algorithms, as required, for digital solutions to solve engineering problems.

  • Develop technical requirements and functional design specifications for digital solutions, as required, to be built by development teams

  • Collaborate in the development of process engineering, O&M focused and/or system planning/design digital tools to support the project implementation process. This will include projects defined by the Digital Delivery Steering Group, Sector Leaders and push innovation projects ideated by and driven by Water’s OI&T.

  • Collaborate with the OI&T team to build a strong Innovation group and culture across the water business.

  • Collaborate with a range of stakeholders on applied research projects.

  • Effectively leverage new and emergent technologies in support of water digitalization and delivery practice and innovation efforts.

  • As needed, support the Director of Water Innovation & Technology in internal informational sessions and messaging to keep key stakeholders in the Water BOU (e.g., sector leaders, BCOLs, regional growth leaders, etc.) informed of progress, KPIs, etc.

In addition, the professional will:

  1. collaborate, as needed, on pilot-scale and/or large bench-scale testing of water/wastewater treatment processes and technologies; and

  2. as necessary, support the Director of Innovation and Technology to drive related innovation initiatives within the Water BOU.

  3. develop technical knowledge of water/wastewater/biosolids treatment/management processes and project execution workflow through project execution roles.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Process engineering (water, wastewater, or biosolids/energy) including advanced process modeling.

  • Knowledge of water/wastewater/biosolids treatment/management processes and systems. In depth knowledge of mechanisms is not a requirement but is beneficial.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Programming knowledge and willingness to further expand knowledge capital and skill sets (e.g., python, MATLAB, etc.)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to think strategically and act tactically.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within all levels of an organization.

  • Expert level Microsoft product user; Office365 Suite including Visio and Project

  • Functional knowledge of common industry products; Bluebeam, Autodesk Platform Products, Bentely products, ESRI products

  • Willingness to develop and enhance low-code/no-code skill sets

  • Highly curious and willingness to take intellectual risks

  • Team oriented with earnest willingness to share ideas with OI&T team and explore through quick test-and-learn approaches

Education and Experience

B.S. in chemical engineering with lab, research and programming (Python, MATLAB, C ) experience

Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at water and/or wastewater related facilities.
