Your Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Sr. ME) – Movable Bridges with experience inspecting and designing mechanical systems for movable bridges with experience on movable structures in primarily the eastern region of the United States. Work location is flexible with immediate needs in Virginia.

Your Key Responsibilities
Technical Support for Project Execution & Delivery
- The Sr. MEME – Movable Bridges will provide technical support to Stantec’s national bridge and tunnel practice and engage as needed in executing and delivering projects primarily in the eastern region of the United States. The scope of this execution work will vary by project, but the focus will be on AASHTO/AREMA element level mechanical inspections for movable bridges and tunnels, mechanical design and design reviews of mechanical equipment and processes for movable bridges and tunnels, resident/construction engineering inspections of mechanical systems, and promotion of best practices and standards for our movable bridge and tunnel practices.
Mentoring and Recruitment of Professional Staff
- The Sr. ME – Movable Bridges will engage in active mentorship of peers and young professionals who desire guidance on career development objectives. This mentoring and guidance can be for internal staff, industry engagement, or for our client staff. This individual has the opportunity to recruit and build a mechanical and electrical team for movable structures and tunnels.
T echnical Support for Regional Business Development Activities
The Sr. ME – Movable Bridges provides technical support to Regional Business Leaders and Regional Sector Leaders in the identification, positioning and pursuit of strategic clients promoting strategic project opportunities. This technical support includes, but may not be limited to face-to-face client interactions, site visits, technical training for client staff, workshop presentations on movable structures technology, planning, regulatory frameworks, etc. The focus of this aspect of the work description is the “top-of-the-funnel” project opportunities. This role also provides technical support to our Client Account Managers and Market Sector Leads within the respective region of coverage for specific Business Development activities associated with proposal development and interview preparation and delivery, with the primary intent of winning specific project work. This support can take the form of writing technical approaches for proposals, developing slide decks for the technical aspects of competitive interviews and developing work-breakdown structures for project delivery schemes.
Member of AREMA preferred.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Demonstrated skill at movable bridge inspections and design.
Working knowledge of movable bridge mechanical operations, parameters and design.
Proven track record delivering designs on complex bridge and infrastructure projects and coordinating teams from different disciplines.
In-depth understanding of all phases of project document production including codes, legal and design requirements for relevant Authorities/Agencies
Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting, engage in creative and critical thought, and effectively communicate ideas, design issues and solutions to others.
Proven ability to lead communication with facility owners, regulators, and other stakeholders.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Professional Engineer with registrations in NY, NJ, and VA preferred
Minimum 20 years of experience in the mechanical design and inspection of movable bridges, structures and tunnels with experience in NY, NJ, and / or VA preferred.
Position will primarily work in an office setting with flexible work environment available. Inspections will require field work and will likely require travel approximately 25% of the time.
