Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest and demonstrated experience in natural resource management applied ecology. Your role as Senior Ecosystem Restoration Technician will be to lead development and delivery of ecosystem restoration projects throughout the upper Midwest. In this role, you will support business development opportunities, assist in project management for environmental consulting and ecosystem restoration contracting projects, lead project implementation and field work, and support staff training and development. This is a full-time position based out of our office in Naperville, Illinois.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead field crews to carry-out tasks related to invasive species identification and control (herbicide spraying and cutting / mowing), native seeding and planting, prescribed burning, and brush / tree removal. Equipment and tool operations to conduct the above tasks may include the use of light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, herbicide sprayers, ATVs / UTVs, and tractors / skid loaders with various attachments.

  • Train and mentor ecosystem restoration staff to develop skills while conducting field tasks such as plant identification, invasive species control methods, ecological restoration techniques, and natural area assessments.

  • Implement a safety-first mindset and applying all established health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) standards during all office and field operations.

  • Conduct ecological site assessments and assist project managers and environmental scientists to develop site planning documents, proposals, cost estimates, and project-specific safety plans.

  • Interpret restoration plans, develop workplans, and issue work requests for effective delivery of ecosystem restoration projects.

  • Effectively communicate workplans and field assignments to crew leaders and staff.

  • Perform field quality control and help innovate field operations to meet high standards for safety, compliance, and quality.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Required:

  • Applied general knowledge of upper Midwest native and invasive species, plant identification, natural areas, and ecology

  • Demonstrated experience with crew and/or volunteer leadership, mentorship, and effective team communication

  • Demonstrated organization skills and capability of managing staff and resources to stay within project budgets and timelines

  • Ability to operate and conduct routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs / ATVs, and tractors

  • A valid state drivers license and good driving record, Class A commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within one month

  • Previous experience utilizing iPads and familiarity with computers, Microsoft Office software, tablets, and GPS units

  • Positive safety-first attitude

  • Commitment to producing high quality in-field work products

  • Ability to walk 4-6 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs

  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions

  • Valid state Pesticide Applicator license, including applicable categories for herbicide application in natural areas and aquatic environments, or ability to obtain within one month

  • Must complete a pre-employment drug screen

Preferred:

  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire Intro (S-130 / S-190 / L-180) or National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire burn boss certifications (S-290)

  • Illinois Prescribed Burn Manager Certification

  • Advanced equipment operation and experience conducting routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and medium-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs / ATVs, tractors, and skid steers.

  • ATV / UTV and chainsaw safety training

  • OSHA 30-hour, OSHA 40-hour, and/or HAZWOPR certification

  • Familiarity with best management practices for stormwater and sediment control including installation, maintenance, and inspection

  • Valid Class A commercial driver's license and experience driving medium duty trucks and trailers

  • Previous experience utilizing ESRI and ArcGIS -based software

Education and Experience

  • 3 years of experience in natural areas management techniques including herbicide applications, cutting / mowing, controlled burning, and native planting.

  • Undergraduate or Associate's Degree in an environmental discipline, preferred.
