Your Opportunity

This position will serve as part of the leadership team for the US West Transportation Business Line and will report primarily to the Regional Discipline Leader. You will be responsible for managing discipline-specific professional and technical standards, quality assurance practices, health and safety, best practices, research and development, and innovation; and for attracting top technical expertise to the business center. The BCDL partners with the business center managing leader (BCML) and the business center sector leader (BCSL) to market discipline-specific design and technical expertise to our local and regional clients, as well as to our global and national clients.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the quality and innovation of the engineering work undertaken in the business center (BC).

  • Understand the expertise and professional/technical registrations of all engineering staff in the BC.

  • Ensure adherence to the professional standards and best practices within the BC that have been established by the Discipline Leader.

  • Ensure full adherence to the PM Framework, maintaining ISO compliance and audit compliance as necessary.

  • Through active participation in the BC’s staffing process, provide PMs with appropriate staff for projects, either from within the BC, or from other BCs if local staff are not available, or do not have relevant expertise.

  • Together with the BCSL and BCML, implement the methodologies within the BC for the creation and review of workplans, independent reviews, design reviews and technical reviews on all engineering projects, using the standards that have been established by the Discipline Leader.

  • Take timely corrective action on any projects that encounter technical challenges in order to avoid claims and take responsibility for mitigating any claims in the BC.

  • Conduct a minimum of four independent reviews of final deliverables within the BC

  • Be an engaged leader, actively coach and support the career development of the engineering staff and take personal responsibility for employee retention and recruitment.

  • Enhance and stand for quality, integrated design, collaborative practice and design excellence.

  • Will, as required, interface and advise client, manage staff and assist with the review of technical documents to meet the needs of projects; will ultimately be 70% billable on projects.

  • People Leadership

  • Assist in resource management processes and recruitment. Attract and retain suitable technical experts for / within the BC.

  • Drive career development, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, and leadership development within the BC.

  • Participate in employees’ career development and performance review sessions, salary reviews and bonus evaluations.

  • Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the other Business Center leaders to achieve key business development, financial and operational performance goals across Stantec.

  • Collaborate with other BCDLs and National Discipline Leaders (DL) to develop and leverage expertise across offices.

  • Facilitate collaboration among other business lines.

  • Marketing and Business Development:

  • Assist the BCSL and BCML by providing technical expertise and support for pursuits within the BC and region.

  • Proactively use, promote, and manage the Stantec Pipeline for business development pursuits.

  • Make one annual presentation at a conference or event attended by current or future clients.

  • Financial Management

  • Assist with developing the annual business plan and budget for the business line in respect of technical and training aspects.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET certified institution. A master’s degree would be an asset.

PE or SE required.

A minimum of 15 years of current technical project experience.
