Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Gulf Coast environmental services group is seeking an Environmental Scientist/Ecologist/Biologist to participate in environmental field surveys and reporting support for our clients in the renewable energy, electric transmission, and other business sectors. The selected candidate will assist our team of environmental professionals with environmental construction monitoring, impact analysis, wetland, stream, and vegetation assessments/monitoring, and endangered species surveys in Texas and across the Gulf Coast.

As an Environmental Scientist/Ecologist/Biologist, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, ecosystem restoration engineers, NEPA specialists, environmental planners, and regulatory experts. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work; it may also involve extensive travel and several days in the field and away from home. This position is open to candidates throughout Texas.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Environmental construction compliance monitoring (stormwater and erosion control, resource protection, hazardous material handling and spill response, site reclamation, etc.)

  • Vegetation inventories/monitoring

  • GPS data collection and mapping support

  • ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications

  • Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data

  • Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review

  • Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments

  • Endangered resource record reviews

  • Aquatic assessments (lake and stream)

  • Wetland and stream delineation and assessment

  • Background data reviews

  • Environmental plan and permit application preparation

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • An interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation or restoration, and the outdoors is essential

  • Able to solve problems using critical thinking

  • Complete tasks with consideration for your own and the team's safety

  • Maintaining a positive attitude through possessing realistic expectations of fieldwork in all weather conditions and terrain

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with the MS Office suite

  • Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail

  • Experience working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required

  • Working knowledge of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required)

  • Willing to learn new skills while conducting fieldwork

  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center

  • Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record

  • Willing and able to travel and conduct fieldwork in potentially remote areas for extended periods (up to 75% of the time) including overnight travel

  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment that weigh up to 50 lbs.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (biology, ecology, natural resources, rangeland ecology, soil science, or related natural resources field)

Demonstrated experience with ecological and/or biological surveys in the region

Three or more years experience in fieldwork with some experience leading field teams in natural resource inventories and surveys and/or experience with stormwater monitoring or environmental construction compliance monitoring

Must be comfortable with computers, Trimble hand-held GPS units, or similar GPS-based survey equipment

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
