Your Opportunity

Stantec GS, Inc. has an opportunity for a full-time Biologist/Ecologist to play an integral part in helping support our nationwide federal environmental planning programs, with a focus in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This position will be based in our Honolulu office.

Your Key Responsibilities

Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, and associated studies and environmental permitting for a variety of projects in the Pacific region. Projects may include or involve planning terrestrial, avian, or aquatic habitat surveys, environmental effects monitoring programs, sea bird surveys, botanical and wildlife surveys, species at-risk surveys, assessing impacts to species from various sources, and potential impact to multiple taxa in different habitats among others.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

This position will provide important support to environmental planning documentation evaluating potential effects from U.S. military training programs.

  • The successful candidate must have the legal right to work in United States.

  • Certain assignments may require ability to obtain a security clearance.

  • Knowledge of and experience with applicable federal environmental regulations as they relate to biological resources (including the marine environment), including but not limited to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Sikes Act, the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Clean Water Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and others

  • Demonstrated experience and strong desire for multi-disciplinary internal collaboration, and proposal development

  • Demonstrated technical writing skills and strong verbal communication

  • Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/technical backgrounds including internal and external clients and regulatory agencies

  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Willingness and ability to travel for project work

  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety protocols

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record

  • Position requires a pre-employment drug screen

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, ecology or closely related field

  • 8 years of professional experience applying learned skills in biology with particular emphasis in the Pacific Region

  • Experience in the regulatory review process for the biological components of NEPA projects

  • Experience with regulatory agency consultation, biological assessments, integrated natural resource management plans, habitat conservation plans, essential fish habitat assessments, and development of mitigation measures

  • Experience preparing or contributing to environmental assessments/impact statements pursuant to NEPA

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Masters degree in biology, marine biology, ecology, or closely related field;

  • SCUBA certified, with scientific dive experience

  • Experience executing marine species surveys

  • Experience in the Pacific Ocean, Western US and/or Eastern US waters as well

  • Knowledge of and experience with GIS/GPS, resource mapping, and spatial analysis

  • Active American Academy of Underwater Sciences Scientific Diver Status

  • Taxonomic expertise for identifying Pacific Marine Species

  • Advanced data analysis and interpretation skills;

  • Experience with database management

  • Federal recovery permits, and any other ecological certifications

  • Training and experience in spatial statistics

  • Experience evaluating/assessing:

    • Benthic Communities – corals o Marine Mammals
    • Sea Turtles
    • Other ESA-listed Species
    • Invasive Species
    • Fishes
    • Marine Birds
    • Marine deep water ecosystems (water column and sea floor)
    • Marine / Oceanic Habitats
    • Taxa, Assemblages, Ecological Regimes
    • Phytoplankton and Primary Production

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • $87,600 - $131,300 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CO and HI

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
