Your Opportunity

Your Opportunity as an Urban Planner within our Community Development business line, you will have the opportunity to work on projects such as downtown revitalization plans, resiliency plans, transportation corridors, streetscapes, and transit-oriented developments. Our highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team specializes in urban design; integration of architecture, street design, public space design, and sustainability with urban planning; bicycle, and pedestrian-oriented planning. We connect the people, places, and resources that take a project from concept to reality.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation and/or analysis of planning related policy documents, site plans, subdivisions, road closure and rezoning applications.

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Conduct research regarding planning policy, land use, social and economic topics.

  • Provide professional advice regarding planning policy and zoning interpretation and regulatory approvals.

  • Create performance expectations for staff and project teams ensuring good communication regarding expectations, work culture and safety

  • Communicating with other multidisciplinary team members on relevant aspects of projects.

  • Presentation skills to speak to audiences ex. the public, business and municipal Councils.

  • Leading facilitation of public engagement events.

  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other business development activities.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Membership/eligibility, with the Canadian Institute of Planners or Alberta Professional Planners Institute.

  • Knowledge and experience in community development and urban design leading practices.

  • Experience in subdivision design and innovative planning approaches.

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills, organizational skills, and high attention to detail.

  • Leadership skills

  • Demonstrated public consultation experience.

  • Strong project management skills and experience of planning theory, practice and procedures.

  • Creative problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft and other programs such as InDesign are an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Urban Planning; Master's degree in Planning is considered an asset.

  • Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position will primarily work in an office environment. Some travel may be required, such as delivering plans or documents to reviewing agencies or clients or to attend meetings. May occasionally visit study areas, construction sites and/or be exposed to outside elements and inclement weather conditions.
