Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for a talented and ambitious Intermediate Marine Scientist to participate and help lead our client programs. The position will be located in our Dartmouth, Nova Scotia office and will focus on projects throughout Atlantic Canada. The ideal candidate for this position is one with experience planning and carrying out field programs in various marine and freshwater settings, with strong data collection, interpretation and reporting abilities. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to field programs, components of environmental assessments, and environmental permitting activities for a variety of projects. Projects may include fish and fish habitat surveys, marine mammal surveys, benthic habitat surveys, species-at-risk surveys, off-shore energy programs and environmental effects monitoring (EEM) programs as they relate to projects in marine environments.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Program.

  • Participate in fisheries, aquatic and marine resources projects including field surveys, field components of environmental assessments, monitoring programs, data management, statistical analysis, and interpretation.

  • Assist in the development of technical proposals, reports, studies and regulatory approval applications.

  • Participate in client and regulatory communication and business development.

  • Complete tasks according to approved scopes of work, on schedule and budget.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Proficient in policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training.

  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment and under deadlines.

  • Experience conducting and reviewing underwater video and conducting fish habitat assessments, sediment sampling, marine field programs, turbidity monitoring, and water quality surveys.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems in the field.

  • Ability to work on small boats and offshore vessels/platforms is required.

  • Experience operating small boats is an asset.

  • Availability for regular field work locally and throughout Atlantic Canada, and possibly beyond in remote locations for up to 14 days at a time (or at times longer) under a variety of conditions. Willingness to travel for project work, training and business development opportunities.

  • Working knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements, particularly with respect to marine and freshwater fish and fish habitat.

  • Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office applications and familiarity with basic database and statistical software packages.

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Secondary experience with projects related to freshwater habitat, coastal engineering, and/or terrestrial assessments (e.g., vegetation, wildlife, birds, wetlands) is an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor or graduate degree in marine/aquatic biology, marine/aquatic ecology, or a related discipline from a recognized university or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of five years’ experience which may include a combination of post-graduate educational experience.

  • Previous consulting experience is considered a strong asset for this role.

Work Environment

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
