Your Opportunity

Our Dartmouth, NS office is looking for a highly motivated Automation Designer / Engineer to join our growing, multi-disciplinary team. Responsibilities will include the development and implementation of complete automation systems, safety integration and the design of electrical systems. You will be an excellent communicator and highly skilled problem-solver with a strong attention to detail. You will be expected to work independently and as an integrated member of an interdisciplinary team working closely with your colleagues, clients, contractors, and suppliers.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Integrate automation systems using proven hardware.

  • Focus on the PLC, HMI, Drive (AC/DC/Servo) and communication networks.

  • Investigate existing machine operations, automation, control panels and field devices.

  • Conduct research to determine viable solutions for identified design issues or improvements.

  • Prepare wiring schematics for safety systems to provide required levels of personnel protection.

  • Evaluation of safety levels with Sistema and manufacturer data.

  • Prepare recommendations for system improvements to meet the project objectives.

  • Prepare electrical schematics, panel layouts, interconnect wiring diagrams and detailed bill of materials.

  • Prepare PLC and HMI programming, PLC program cycle flowcharts, and work instructions / narratives.

  • Participate through installation / construction support of the new design.

  • Participate in the commissioning of the new system.

  • Participate in training to client personnel for the new automation system.

  • Support as-built drawings and support the project after start-up.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong attention to detail are essential.

  • Experience with the application of the Canadian Electrical Code is an asset.

  • Experience with Safety PLCs selection and programming is a definite asset.

  • Experience with AC/DC/Servo drive selection, programming and commissioning is a requirement.

  • Experience with the configuration, troubleshooting and commissioning of communication networks including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, DH and ProfiNet is a definite asset.

  • Experience with PLC selection, programming and commissioning (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, PLC-5, SLC, as well as Siemens and Schneider PLCs) is a requirement.

  • Experience with HMI selection, programming development and commissioning is a requirement.

  • Experience with control panel layout design will be beneficial in this role.

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office will be beneficial in this role.

  • Experience with AutoCAD will be beneficial in this role.

Education and Experience

Minimum of six (6) years of related work experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Eligibility for registration with TechNova or Engineers Nova Scotia is preferred.
