Stantec’s southeastern environmental services group is seeking environmental scientists/ecologists to serve as a field water resources delineation/assessment lead and to provide environmental field surveys, reporting, and permitting support for our clients in the transportation, renewable energy, electric transmission, and other business sectors. The selected candidate will lead local teams to complete water resource (wetland and stream) delineations/assessments, stream functional assessments, and stream hydrologic determinations, as well as assist our team of environmental professionals on environmental impact analysis, vegetation assessments/monitoring, and listed species surveys across the eastern U.S. Open to candidates located throughout across eastern/southeastern US – Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia .

As an Environmental Scientist/Ecologist, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, ecosystem restoration engineers, NEPA specialists, environmental planners, and regulatory experts. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work; it may also involve extensive travel and several consecutive days in the field.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and assist with project management on a wide variety of environmental planning and permitting projects for clients in the renewable energy, transportation, and development sectors

  • Complete WOTUS delineations and assessments, vegetation inventories/monitoring, wildlife surveys and habitat assessments, aquatic assessments

  • Manage agency coordination related to permitting for Threatened and Endangered Species, CWA Sections 404/401, and Section 106 Cultural Resources; as well as other applicable local, state and federal agencies

  • Lead stream hydrologic determinations

  • May assist other ecologists with bat mist net surveys

  • Provide GPS data collection, processing, and mapping support

  • Lead ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications

  • Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.

  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.

  • Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work.

  • Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science or related natural resources field)

  • 4-12 years-experience with water resources delineations and assessments is required, with some field experience in natural resource inventories and surveys desired

  • Qualified Hydrologic Professional certification is strongly preferred

  • Must be comfortable using computers and collecting field data utilizing ArcGIS Field Maps or similar GPS based survey software.
