Your Opportunity

Stantec Government Services is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support our professional consulting services team. You will work on large projects of high complexity, and as a leader of a team or project through all phases of a project lifecycle. You will be responsible for helping to develop and implement an engineering discipline group equipped with up-to-date engineering and design tools and innovations, technical and supervisory capabilities and operating procedures to successfully and efficiently execute projects and consulting services resulting in client satisfaction and on-time delivery. Work consists of advanced mechanical design for the built environment including but not limited to HVAC, piping and plumbing, and the use of digital practice technology such as AutoCAD and Revit as well as mechanical engineering specific computer applications.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems for the built environment as Engineer of Record.

  • Perform field investigations and analyze existing conditions to develop comprehensive engineering solutions.

  • Apply strong buildings mechanical engineering skills and knowledge to produce accurate and timely deliverables.

  • Prepare required calculations to meet project requirements.

  • Support project requirements including basis-of design narratives, opinions-of-probable-costs estimates, drawing documentation, systems design and technical specifications.

  • Collaborate with project managers and support design staff as part of a coordinated design team.

  • Actively participate in the development of design staff through work on projects as well as serving as a trainer, mentor and resource for junior design staff.

  • Handle design development and document preparation in written and computer-aided design formats.

  • Effectively delegate work to production support staff.

  • Research, prepare, and present coordinated design options.

  • Review drawings and research code issues to comply with national, city, state, and county regulations.

  • Interact with clients and project stakeholders.

  • Communicate with manufacturers and contractors to address challenges and develop practical designs.

  • Provide input on the creation and editing of technical specifications.

  • Provide contract documents that meet required codes and quality assurance standards.

  • Resolve design conflicts and questions and provide recommendations to address issues and add value.

  • Understand and work within project budgets and schedules to help project manager meet project financial and schedule goals.

  • Provide construction administration support such as reviewing contractor RFI’s, issuing field directives, perform construction observation and punch lists, review contractor change requests.

  • Collaborate with the practice and market leaders to obtain and disseminate technical knowledge.

  • May act as QC reviewer on projects and participate in project Peer Reviews.

  • Maintain and expand current knowledge of technologies, trends and the markets in which we work as they apply to the applicable project types, and continually strengthens skills.

  • Proactively pursue additional knowledge in related disciplines by attending available in house and external training.

  • Attend in-house project meetings.

  • Actively participate in meeting, initiatives, and projects that support studio and firm-wide goals.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience with BIM360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud.

  • Proficient to Advanced knowledge of Autodesk software including AutoCAD and REVIT

  • Knowledge of and ability to use software for heating/cooling load calculations, either Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, IES, or equivalent.

  • Deep buildings mechanical engineering knowledge, including but not limited to HVAC, piping, plumbing and device layouts.

  • Ability to prepare and review detailed drawings.

  • Ability to perform field walks, which may include climbing ladders and walking/standing for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to integrate design elements with architectural, civil, structural, ICT, electrical and other disciplines to deliver a coordinated, constructible design.

  • Strong knowledge applicable codes and standards, including IMC, IPC, NFPA, IBC, and ASHRAE, as well as LEED and green building requirements.

  • Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into deliverables.

  • Ability to demonstrate a credible and trustworthy presence through professionalism, demeanor, and technical knowledge.

  • Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.

  • Knowledge of specialty engineering applications.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively support technical project consultation with key clients and project stakeholders.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college/university

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience

  • Must be a Registered Professional Engineer in good standings in the United States

  • Proficient in REVIT, AutoCAD, and HVAC load calculation software

  • ASHRAE certifications, LEED AP accreditation, and/or other certifications/ accreditations are desirable

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
