Our history with local and regional jurisdictions and tribal governments includes plan review, field inspection, and safety consultant.

Senior Plans Examiners are responsible for reviewing simple to complex residential and commercial projects such as new construction and building improvements for all occupancy types based on applicable codes, ordinances, and administrative directives enforced by our jurisdictional clients.

This includes reading, interpreting, and approving plans and specifications; working directly with developers, contractors, and customers to identify, document, and assist in resolving issues to gain compliance in all building codes; understanding construction methods and product applications; evaluating compliance based upon the specific conditions of each project including scope of work to be performed, nature of work, age of existing building, codes applicable during the original construction, and present code requirements and deficiencies; calculating fees; and maintaining review paperwork and files.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Reviewing all project document plans, calculations, product specifications, and other submittal documents for accuracy, constructability, design conformance, and code compliance.

  • Communicating design and code nonconformance deficiencies and approvals via electronic and written correspondence per Stantec and client procedures and directives.

  • Accurate calculation of project and customer fees.

  • Using Stantec and client-based hardware and/or software applications as instructed.

  • Researching and documenting technical data as required for assigned projects into various formats per procedures.

  • Communicating plan and code nonconformance issues and approvals via written or electronic correspondence and/or moderating or otherwise attending in-person meetings as needed.

  • Creating and maintaining internal and external plan review records.

  • Communicating client processes, review timeframes, and alternate means and methods.

  • Maintaining code knowledge through code update research, obtaining certifications, and participation at continuing education seminars and classes to maintain certifications.

  • Assisting client, Stantec peers, and customers in clarifying requirements and resolving issues.

  • Desired candidates prioritize customer service, integrity, and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Knowledge of:

  • International Code Council Building codes, jurisdictional ordinances and directives related to building, structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, accessibility, and energy codes and amendments as applied to various commercial projects.

  • Various construction materials and methods and stages of construction.

  • Mathematical principles required to review technical calculations for accuracy.

  • Microsoft Office at a proficient level.

Ability to:

  • Cooperate with internal and external Stantec clients and the public.

  • Read and accurately interpret plans and specifications.

  • Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies.

  • Interpret graphic instructions, such as blueprints, plans, schematic drawings, or other visual aids.

  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material.

  • Measure dimensions using engineer's and architect's scales.

  • Work safely without presenting a threat to self or others in compliance with Stantec regulations.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess the following certifications: ICC Building Plans Examiner AND 2-4 other ICC certifications in other related ICC codes.

  • Driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required.

Education and Experience

Minimum 5 (five) years of experience reviewing plans, specifications, and other data to ensure proposed design conforms to site appropriate codes and related regulations. Other combinations of experience and education meeting the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
