Your Opportunity

This senior leadership role, reporting to the Regional Business Leader (RBL) or Regional Growth Lead (RGL), the Business Center Practice Leader (BCPL) is responsible for leading the pursuit and delivery of excellent work to our Community Development (CD) clients. The BCPL is the key leader for Stantec’s Community Development practice in the Northeast, overseeing our civil engineering, landscape architecture, and community planning practices in that geographic area. Accountable for the top line, the BCPL leads the growth of the Business Center and Stantec’s market position while providing innovative design solutions with exceptional quality and execution that exceed client expectations. The BCPL works closely in conjunction with the BC Operations Lead (BCOL) who has responsibility for the business bottom line.

Your Key Responsibilities

Client Focus:

  • Develop new clients for Stantec and exceed client expectations through strong account management across the BC and personally leading accounts for major clients in the BC.

  • Achieve minimum client- and proposal-specific marketing and business development (M&BD) sales goals, including internal cross-selling initiatives.

  • Lead and participate in pursuits and campaigns for major BC opportunities.

  • Drive client relationship strategies, working with Principals and BC leaders to achieve strong results in client satisfaction surveys.

  • Set a Client-focused tone in the BC.

Business Development and Collaboration:

  • Actively contribute to win strategies and successful proposal deliver and engage at a hands-on level in key pursuits as needed

  • Engage in projects to ensure client satisfaction to drive repeat work with Clients

  • Track pursuit success rate and Return on Investment (ROI) on a client-by-client basis.

  • Lead growth of the BC through developing and leading the business development, key pursuit, and sales strategy and hold Principals accountable to expand our reach and client base utilizing strong marketing, business development, sales account management plans.

  • Responsible for developing and managing the marketing and business development (M&BD) plan for the BC, including cross-selling.

  • Increase visibility of Stantec by sharing our knowledge and innovation story through key client engagements to enhance our reputation and drive revenue.

  • Oversee an effective Go/No Go Review process with Principals and track compliance of that process.

  • Partner with other BCPLs and leaders to drive collaboration on pursuits across geographies and business lines.

  • Responsible for utilizing and ensuring the opportunity Pipeline tool is maintained and monitor Pipeline to optimize business development plans. Specifically, use the Community Development Ignyte Business Intelligence (BI) tool and processes.

  • Ensure local marketplace reputation through established relationships and support of Regional Leads.

  • Develop and maintain Stantec’s Integrated Practice in the specified BC, which includes the maintenance of a cohesive Stantec brand, key client and account development and maintenance, and market and community outreach and engagement.

  • Accountable to achieve growth targets of the BC, including through organic growth and acquisition.

Project Focus:

  • Lead delivery of significant BC projects

  • Achieve direct utilization in the range of 35 to 50%.

  • Actively contribute to pursuits in key roles such as Independent Technical Reviewers.

  • Oversee risk management related to projects and pursuits, including reviewing fees and proposals and in coordination with the BCOL and RBL.

Practice:

  • Inspire, motivate, and hold the team accountable for the delivery of innovative solutions.

  • Responsible for assigning responsibility for professional excellence in all disciplines present in the BC to foster innovation, sustainable design and planning principles, and use of technology.

  • Lead or assign responsibility for selling of digital practice, tools, and applications.

Provide broad leadership influence:

  • Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner, and a source of counsel and advice for their BC.

  • Proactively identify opportunities to reinforce and further develop Stantec’s high-performance culture with a focus on innovation, speed, and productivity.

  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company.

  • Uphold a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, encourages individual integrity, and focuses on the customer and service delivery.

  • Provide support through ongoing collaboration with BOU Operations, RBLs, RLs, and BCOLs regarding the resolution of operational issues identified within the BC.

SUPPORT FUNCTIONS

Business and Financial Management:

  • Support BCOL with the annual budget for the BC, outlining the vision, focus, and priorities for implementation and setting specific goals for business performance.

  • Accountable for top-line revenue growth, the BCPL also supports the BCOL in meeting established targets for net revenue, gross margin, and operating income targets in the BC.

  • Responsible for net revenue forecasts by period, quarter, and year-end.

  • Partner with BCOL to develop and implement improvement plans for distressed business units and BCs, including focus on write-offs and business line expenses.

  • Support achieving utilization rate and backlog targets and partner with BCOL to drive collaboration and work-sharing across the practice.

Health and Safety:

  • Support BCOL with the health and safety performance of the BC, including the monitoring of leading and lagging indicators, meeting leading indicator goals, and following up on BC Improvement Plans.

People Leadership

  • Support BCOL with developing, attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent.

  • Establish employee connectedness to leadership by interfacing frequently with employees.

  • Partner with BCOL by conducting quarterly office visits and regular BC wide meetings to communicate the vision, business strategy, and progress against applicable action plans.

  • Support the overall talent management lifecycle, including career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching, and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development for the BC.

  • Support the BCOL with managing performance and compensation in accordance with Stantec’s compensation philosophy within the BC through yearly employee performance review (YEPR), rate review, and short-term incentive program allocation for the BC.

  • Direct reports include roles focused on M&BD and Principals in the BC.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong business development skills, including significant experience building and maintaining productive relationships with a client base.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and team-building skills.

  • Skills and experience to effectively lead, challenge, and inspire the leadership group and staff to work together cohesively as a team.

  • Entrepreneurial orientation with a strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting services provider.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organization, coordination, and managerial skills.

  • Knowledge of market assessment techniques, insights, and contacts.

  • Proven success in developing new clients and maintaining strong client relationships.

  • Familiarity with industry trends and industry leaders in the region.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 10 years’ related work, leadership, financial management, business development, and consulting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Professional registration in a related field.

Position will primarily work in an office setting. Travel is required to other Stantec office locations, the field, and/or meetings with clients.
